THEORITICAL CONSIDERATIONS OF THE SECOND LANGUAGE ACQUISITION PROFILES OF THE ANAANG BILINGUALS
Abstract
This research work, a study of the second language acquisition profiles of the Anaang bilinguals from the theoretical considerations is an attempt to unveil the various theories and rules which give enablement to the second language (L2) acquisition processes of the Anaang bilinguals in a second Language situation. It tries to explain whether L2 learners do or do not benefit from reinforcement as a theory as they go about learning the English language. To achieve these purposes, the study is fixed into the Nature-Nurture Controversy as its theoretical Frame work. This theory is so adopted because it is analogous to the concept of “Acquisition” and “Learning” which is the focus of our present study in order to resolve the controversy as to which factor of language acquisition- nature or nurture is more influential of the two opposing schools of thought- the Mentalists and the Empiricists in their propositions on language acquisition and learning. It was revealed that the controversy surrounding nature and nurture in language acquisition process centres on what cannot be empirically observed or demonstrated (nature) and what can be so observed or demonstrated (nurture). From the above findings, conclusions were drawn to include the fact that in the context of this research undertaking, aspects of both nature and nurture are, nonetheless, relevant to language acquisition.
