Abstract

This work is an appraisal of Godfrey Ozumba's Integrative Humanism and the Challenge of Democracy in Nigeria. Integrative humanism as propounded by Godfrey Ozumba and extrapolated in this work is a ratio-spiritocentric approach in understanding human existence, interpreting human affairs and a rigorous philosophic attitude which takes into cognizance the spiritual and the physical dimensions of human existence and realities in all areas of human endeavours including governance. Democracy as practiced in Nigeria has been confronted with series of problems such as corruption, ethnicity, human rights abuse, religious bigotry, rule of law and all manner of arbitrariness. This research is aimed at nding a holistic and lasting solution to the problems of democracy in Nigeria. To achieve our aim, we shall apply the philosophical methods of analysis, reective and speculative prescriptions. By this approach, we shall be contributing immensely to conict resolution and enlarging the frontiers of knowledge for comparative and integrative studies. Therefore, propelling democracy on the wheels of integrative humanism is a sure foundation for a better Nigeria. It may not lead us to the much envisaged el-dorado, but it would certainly lead us out of the wood and confusion of the post modernism and its anarchism.
