Abstract

The paper examines the root causes of communal conflicts in Agatu land of Nasarawa State. It identifies the complex interplay of historical grievances, resource competition, land disputes and ethnic tensions as causative factors. The intricate nature of the conflict has resulted in the destruction of farmlands, loss of livestock, and displacement of farmers, leading to decreased food production and heightened food insecurity. Additionally, the local markets and trade routes have been adversely affected, stifling economic growth and leading to increased poverty rates among the Agatu people. Besides, the ongoing conflict has deterred investment and development projects and further exacerbated the economic stagnation of Agatu. Both primary and secondary sources of data are used. Collected data were qualitatively analyzed. The paper underscores the urgent need for effective conflict resolution and sustainable economic policies to restore and stabilize the Agatu economy, ensuring long-term development and prosperity for the affected communities.
