EVALUATION OF CONTEMPORARY HAUSA HAND EMBROIDERY CAP PRODUCTION COTTAGE INDUSTRY

Abstract

Recent development in the Hausa contemporary traditional cap embroidery production cottage industry indicates its growth, viability and potentiality as a strong employer of a large nuniber of Nigerian men, women and children. This paper examined its cultural, social and economic implications on the Hausa and other Nigerians. A descriptive field study method was used, involving primary data obtainedfrom the geld as well as from some secondary data sources including journals, thesis, and other sources. The major findings indicate that the Hausa traditional cap embroidery cottage industry is a viable venture creating job opportunities for Nigerian men, women and children. It is also helping to sustain yarn manufacturing industries by consuming their products as w as helping to retain an important Nigerian cultural heritage "the hand embroidered caps." Recommendations were made as to how to help the industry especially through technical andfitiancial assistance.
