BOKO HARAM INSURGENCY AS A SECURITY CHALLENGE TO THE GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT OF NIGERIA
Abstract
Since 2009 when Boko Haram initially started its insurgency and the aftermath of the killing of Mohammed Yusuf the leader of the sect, the activities of the sect have continued unabated despite the effort of the government to curtail the heinous crime of the sect. Boko Harem activities have destabilized the socio-economic activities increasing crime and destruction of both lives and properties of Nigerian citizens. This can be attested to by the mass movement of people living in North-Eastern part of the countryside most especially Bronu, Zamfara and the entire North-East region of Nigeria. An analytic method will be employed in our quest of understanding the activities and operations of Boko Haram sect in Nigeria, that have led to the social economic, and psychological implications in the North-East region of country where the sect has a strong presence and how it affects the growth and development of the country. This predominant threat the security challenges in this areas, from unbarring attacks and counter attacks on Nigerian military formation, the citizens, individuals, public, governmental institution kidnapping, and the destruction of properties.
