Abstract

This study looks at how the elderly are honoured and cared for in Buguma, from both social and religious points of view. In many African communities, older people are respected as keepers of wisdom, culture, and moral guidance. However, the effects of modern life, movement to cities, and changes in family structures have begun to affect the way elders are treated and cared for. This research explores how religious beliefs and social values work together to influence attitudes and actions towards the elderly in Buguma, a town with rich traditions and different religious practices. The research uses a qualitative method, by gathering information through interviews and direct observation. The study looks at what the Bible, Christian teaching, and African traditional religion say about honouring the elderly, as well as the cultural expectations found in Buguma’s communal life. It also examines the main problems faced by older people, such as neglect, loneliness, and poor access to healthcare, and considers how religion helps to address these challenges. The findings show that although people in Buguma still believe in respecting elders, real care is sometimes lacking because of poverty, the breakdown of the extended family, and weaker relationships between generations. Still, churches, mosques, and community groups remain important in supporting older people, providing not only material help but also emotional, spiritual, and social encouragement. The study concludes that bringing together religious teachings and community support can help revive the tradition of honouring and caring for the elderly. Keeping this tradition alive will require family commitment, faith-based action, and supportive policies. This work adds to the discussion on ageing, religion, and social responsibility by showing how cultural respect can be combined with practical care.
