Abstract

This paper attempts give to a theological argument for the relevance of law in the Church based on the very nature of the Church. Its objective is to show that the juridical structure of the Church has a relevance that can be understood by contemplating the mystery of the Church (Presbyterorum Ordinis, 16). Thus, despite the Church being a mystical community of persons gathered together by Word and Sacraments, there is a need for structures of governance, defined rights and obligations, instruments of orderliness, and mutual respect. Drawing insights from ecclesiology vis-a-vis law, the paper concludes that they are not opposed to each other; they are mutually and necessarily complementary in fulfilling the very mission of the Church which is salvation for all (Mystici Corporis Christi, 65).
