Abstract

This paper focuses on the synod on synodality as a turning event that has held centre stage in the church since 2021. This XVI Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops is held in a new, inclusive manner and seeks ways to adapt to new difficulties, strengthen communion, and promote unity. As it gets ready for its second session, this paper reflects on some areas of concern for the church in Nigeria. This paper discusses the implications of these concerns for the Church in Nigeria around three key issues: faithfulness to the apostolic tradition, inclusion in the synodal process, and the impact of Pentecostalism on Catholic worship and life. This paper argues that the concerns and circumstances of the global north and those of the global south are different and there is a tendency to submerge the latter under the concerns of those of the former. This would not reach the inclusiveness intended. This paper, thus, highlights some of the issues of concern for the Church in Nigeria as she prepares for the second session of the synod and discusses how the Church in Nigeria may respond to these issues by recommitting to apostolic principles, enhancing catechesis and better preparing its members for theology. As a result, the synod's goal of a loyal and inclusive Church on a worldwide scale will be advanced, and the sanctity of the Catholic dogma will be preserved.
