Abstract

This research investigates the psychoanalytic dimensions of Nollywood films, with a focus on Biyi Bandele’s Half of a Yellow Sun. Positioned within the global cinematic context; the study seeks to understand how Nigerian films contribute to emotional release and therapeutic effects. Anchored in psychoanalytic theory, it examines the intricate connections between film narratives and their impact on human cognition, emotion, and behaviours. The research emphasizes the cathartic potential of Nigerian cinematic films, analyzing narrative elements such as temporal structures, character development, symbolism, visual metaphors, musical scores, sounds capes, and cinematography, to explore their roles in fostering emotional engagement. Through a detailed psychoanalytic reading of Half of a Yellow Sun, the study delves into its symbolic layers, cultural resonance, and inter-textual connections with other therapeutic films. The findings highlight Nollywood's distinctive ability to shape collective memory, influence perceptions, and promote cultural understanding. The study offers recommendations to Nollywood guilds, film associations, government bodies, educational institutions, and mental health organizations. These suggestions aim to enhance psychoanalytic awareness in the film industry and encourage responsible portrayals of mental health. Ultimately; this research contributes significantly to film studies, uncovering the transformative power of cinema within the unique framework of Nigerian filmmaking.
