RETHINKING MASCULINE LINGUISTICS FOR INCLUSIVE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT; AN OVERVIEW

Abstract

This study examines the complex relationship between language, power and economic development with a focus on how English language systems, adapted for use in Nigeria, construct and promote sex inequalities that impact inclusive economic development. Using linguistic relativism theory, this study provides an overview of masculinelinguistics and how they sustain male dominance which limits female participation in nation building. Proposing strategies for rethinking masculine linguistics, the study amplified the need for change through questioning standard language ideology and developing policies that recognize inclusive language forms for enhanced participation in nation building.
