EVALUATION OF THE IMPLEMENTATION OF CIVIC EDUCATION CURRICULUM IN SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN BAUCHI STATE, NIGERIA
Abstract
This study evaluated the implementation of civic education curriculum in senior secondary schools in Bauchi State, Nigeria. The study adopted descriptive survey design. Four (4) research objectives and corresponding questions guided the study. The population of the study consisted of all civic education teachers in senior secondary schools of Bauchi Metropolitan. The population of civic education teachers is 46 in public schools and 32 in private schools; giving the total population to seventy eight (78) civic education teachers from 39 public and private senior secondary schools. Purposive sampling technique was used. The instrument for data collection for this study is Evaluation of Teachers on Implementation of Civic Education Curriculum Questionnaires (ETICECQ). Face and content validity of the instrument was established whereas the reliability coefficient of the instrument is 0.84. The instrument was administered to civic Education teachers by the researcher and research assistant. Data collected were analysed through the use of descriptive statistics. The research questions were answered using mean and standard deviation. The result revealed that the teachers’ instructional practices for the implementation of civic education curriculum were not adequate. The result also revealed that methods used by teachers for civic education curriculum implementation were inappropriate. It was therefore recommended that Civic education programme should be included into the curriculum of all teacher training institutions and universities in the country in order to professionalize the subject.
