A PRAGMATIC APPROACH TO A PROBLEMATIC DEMOCRACY: A QUEST FOR A BETTER SYSTEM OF GOVERNANCE IN NIGERIA
Abstract
This paper explores a practical alternative system of governance for the Nigerian society. In doing this, the paper ensues a chronological exposition and analysis of political corruption in Nigeria, while maintaining that understanding the links between the past and the present administration is crucial in solving Nigeria’s democratic and governance problem. The paper further posits that the role played by the colonialists in the political arrangements at Independence, favouring a region closely linked to foreign interest, is crucial in understanding the synergy between the past political arrangements, present democratic problems, and problems of governance at large. The paper argues that, to establish an adequate and equitable power-sharing arrangement as a mechanism for ethno-regional power balancing in Nigeria, is the contriving step to democratic sustainability and growth of governance for future Nigerian administration. Through this analysis, the paper recommends wazobianism as a pragmatic political arrangement and concludes that wazobianism is only probable.
