TEACHING ARABIC LANGUAGE FOR SPECIFIC PURPOSES IN NIGERIAN UNIVERSITIES: TRENDS, TOOLS AND TASKS
Abstract
Teaching a language for specific purposes is a new trend in the field of Arabic language teaching and learning. English language as the most famous and widest spoken language in the world has already been known to this field and has taken cognisance of different communities learning the language for different purposes. This study introduced the new trend of language teaching and learning into the curriculum of Arabic language in Nigerian Universities. The study discussed the over view of Arabic language in Nigeria and analysed the concept of language for specific purposes. Some of the new trends, tools and tasks involved in the teaching of Arabic language for specific purpose are elucidated. The study proposed new programmes of learning Arabic language in Nigerian Universities with the ultimate aim of developing a new curriculum for the study of Arabic language in Nigerian Universities. Some of the pedagogical implications of the proposed programmes are highlighted and related to the study of Arabic language for specific purposes.
