Abstract

This study investigates the challenges faced by the film and broadcast media industries in Northern Nigeria, with a specific focus on socio-economic, religious, and regulatory factors that shape media production and consumption. Despite a growing demand for local content and the region's rich cultural heritage, the development and sustainability of local media are hindered by various obstacles. Socio-economic challenges such as poverty and inadequate infrastructure restricting investment in high-quality media production. Moreover, religious obligations, particularly in the predominantly Muslim region, influence both the content produced and audience consumption patterns, leading to self censorship and restrictions on certain topics. Furthermore, regulatory barriers and insufficient policy support further complicate the industry's development. The study adopts a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews to explore media consumption patterns, audience preferences, and the key obstacles limiting industry growth. By focusing on the rural Tilden Fulani community in Bauchi State and urban areas in Jos North, this research highlights the interplay between socio-economic conditions, religious values, and regulatory frameworks in shaping the media landscape. The findings offer valuable insights for media professionals, policymakers, and stakeholders aiming to create a more inclusive, sustainable, and culturally sensitive media environment in Northern Nigeria.
