Translation Studies in Nigeria: Issues and Perspectives

  • Samuel Oladiipo Kolawole

Abstract

It is indeed a great privilege to present this paper on Translation Studies in Nigeria with reference to Issues and Perspectives. When I was invited to give this talk, I was given the latitude to select a title around the topic of perspectives on translation in Nigeria. I suspected that the invitation is based not necessarily on the fact that I am a member of ATSA but probably because I have been involved in the teaching of Translation Studies in my University for two decades now and should have some knowledge of the problems confronting the teaching of Translation in Nigeria. It is a fact that, at present, there are fundamental challenges confronting Translation Studies in our institutions today at diverse levels, some of which we shall try to discuss during this talk. I will like to thank the leadership of ATSA for the great honour of inviting me to talk at the first anniversary of this great association. I also want to congratulate all of us for this historic moment and for the wonderful work we have done in this past year, mobilising our people and interpreting the roles of translation teachers in order to illuminate our path to the future. This talk shall therefore briefly discuss one after the other, what Translation is all about, challenges of Translation, history of Translation Studies, the Nigerian experience and perspectives of the teaching of Translation, Recommendations, and Conclusion.
