Translation and daptation Challenges: Case Study of Sumair’s Translation of Wole Soyinka’s ke: Years of Childhood into rabic

Abstract

This paper discusses relationships between the concepts of Translation and adaptation by analyzing its apparent challenges in Sumair Abdu Robihi‘s translation of Wole Soyinka‘s Ake: years of childhood into Arabic. This research is novel as as it explores a subject matter that is rarely investigated by Arabic scholars in Nigeria. The study adopts descriptive and analytic methods. Findings indicate that the Yoruba poems in Soyinka‘s Ake are not complex, yet Sumair's translation did not adequately capture some of the contextual meanings in the source text. It was further establised that Sumair Employed pragmatic adaptation such as omission, expansion, exoticism, creation and transcription. These findings could be applied to other similar works of authors from different background in the ن إ ٍذن لا ت ىٍلاو ن بف شع ي لا ارإeffort to further the studies of translators.
