DELEGITIMIZING GENDER EQUALITY IN SELECTED NIGERIAN NEWSPAPERS: A CRITICAL DISCOURSE ANALY
Abstract
This paper presents a critical discourse analysis (CDA) of selected Nigerian newspapers to examine the delegitimization of gender equality within their discursive practices. Situated within the context of Nigeria's complex sociocultural and political landscape, the study employs Wodak’s discourse historical approach to CDA to uncover the underlying power dynamics, ideologies, and hegemonic structures embedded in media representations of gender equality. Drawing on theories from critical feminist media studies, the research investigates how Nigerian newspapers construct and potentially delegitimize gender equality through language, imagery, and framing techniques. The study's findings reveal pervasive gender stereotypes, patriarchal ideologies, and marginalization of women's voices and experiences within Nigerian media discourse. By critically analyzing the discursive strategies employed by newspapers, this research contributes to our understanding of the challenges facing gender equality in Nigeria and informs strategies for promoting more equitable and inclusive representations of gender in the media. Ultimately, this study underscores the importance of challenging dominant ideologies and advocating for social change within media representations to advance gender equality and social justice in Nige
