Abstract

Igwebuike is an African concept that is anchored on the ideology of brotherhood (ujamah), sisterhood etc. Its singular aim is to strengthen bonds between Africans so as to foster unity in our diversity. Women as individual members of a given sect in society have roles to play individually and collectively as members of the sect so as to strengthen the sisterly bonds and ensure that each actualizes her potential within the shared bond (I am, because we are). Women have also been socialized as females by society into seeing themselves as inferior to men, rivals and in constant competition with one another. This paper through the philosophical method of analysis, will look into African’s in-depth meaning of the analogy “nwanyi kwesiri imara nwanyi ibe ya” which can be translated into ‘sisterhood”. The overall aim is to foster women solidarity, which is viewed as potent tool in overcoming any form of inequality and oppression. Findings will equally ensure the promotion of strong solidarity, stronger bond among women and also ensure that every woman plays her own role wherever she finds herself for the good of all. Such an understanding among the female gender, is aimed at conquering any form of opposition and oppression which many women experience in societies.
