The Mission of the Catholic Church in Nigeria
A Focus on the South-East Region
Abstract
Using historical method, the article critically analysed the meaning, importance and the implications of mission as understood in the Catholic Church. It traced the various attempts the Catholic Church made to bring Christianity to Nigeria beginning from the 15th century and outlined some of the essential activities of the Catholic Church in Nigeria in general and the South-East in particular. It was discovered that the Catholic Church in the South-East has made tremendous successes in personnel and social development. The data is presented on the table form. In spite of these successes, the article discovered that there is still moral decadence in the society and even among the Christians. The article recommended that the pastors and ministers of the word of God like Christ should be real exemplary to their flock. It also strongly recommended that the word of God through the power of the Holy Spirit should be allowed to transform the life of all in Nigeria beginning with the leaders who should be the agents of change.
