Abstract

This study investigates the views of teachers in technical and vocational education about their selfempowerment needs for improving the image of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET). It is a qualitative phenomenological investigation in which semi-structured interview was used to gather data for the study. Twenty participants were recruited using purposive and snowball sampling techniques. Thematic analysis and graphical representation of themes assisted in explicating the data. All participants had strongly held views and provided unique insights into their perceptions. Eight dominant themes and 21 sub-themes were identified. The sub-themes were the self-empowerment needs of teachers in TVET. Some of these include self awareness, career acceptance, social respect, industry work experience, unconditional assistance, taking responsibility and strategic leadership. The needs identified by participants could be used by TVET teachers, administrators and associations. They could also be used by other organizations campaigning for improvement in TVET image.
