Enhancing Professional Development Need of Business Education Lecturers for Sustainable Development in Bauchi State Higher Institution
Abstract
This study assessed the professional development need of Business Education Lecturers in Bauchi State of North Eastern Nigeria. Two objectives and two research questions guided the study. Descriptive survey research design was employed in the study. The study was conducted in Bauchi State in north eastern geopolitical zone of Nigeria. The population of the study comprised 235 business education lecturers. A sample of 125 respondents was selected using simple random sampling technique A structured questionnaire tagged Enhancing Professional Development Need of Business Education Lecturers Questionnaire (EPDNBELQ) was used in collecting data. The instrument was validated by three experts in the faculty of technology education, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Bauchi. The reliability of the instrument was found to be 0.79. Data were collected by the researcher with the help of four trained research assistants. The data collected were analyzed using mean and standard deviation. The findings include; Most of the Business Education Lecturers in Bauchi State have moderate knowledge of the curriculum and subject matter, but highly needs more classroom management techniques to deal with overcrowded and congested classes, likewise more training is required on pedagogical skills, methodology and teaching competencies of Business Education. The study recommends among others that, more qualified teachers should be employed and offers opportunity for in-service training to the teachers. Furthermore, school based professional development is more ideal to address the peculiar needs of teachers and their students.
