Competencies Needed by Computer Teachers for Effective Teaching of Computer Studies in Secondary Schools in Nsukka Local Government Area of Enugu State
Abstract
This study was designed to identify the competencies needed by computer teachers for effective teaching of computer studies in secondary schools in Nsukka Local Government Area of Enugu State. The study employed descriptive survey research design. The population comprised thirty (30) computer studies teachers. Three research questions and one null hypothesis were used to guide the study. The instrument used for data collection was questionnaire. The instrument was analyzed using mean, standard deviation for the research questions and t-test for the null hypothesis formulated. It was discovered that computer teachers need to be competent in planning, implementation and evaluation of computer instructions for effective teaching of computer studies. Also, the acquisition of competencies by computer teachers for effective teaching will be beneficial to teachers by exposing them to the best teaching methods for computer studies. It also aids computer teachers in choosing the best instructional materials, adopting human approach in interacting with the students to facilitate learning of the use of keyboard, mouse and graphical packages. Based on the above findings a number of recommendations were made among others that Computer teachers should adopt the use of stipulated curriculum/scheme of work by the Ministry of Education for effective teaching of computer studies. Computer teachers should have the mastering of the use of keyboard so as to impart the knowledge of keyboarding to their students and make them employable in their society. Computer teachers should be competent on the use of mouse so as to be able to attend to students’ problems with the use of mouse during and outside classroom lessons. Both female and male computer teachers should be given equal opportunities on improving their competencies for effective teaching of computer studies through professional trainings.
