Challenges Facing TVET Institution-Industry Collaboration in Skills Acquisition for Sustainable Growth in Nigeria
Abstract
The study investigated TVET institution-industry collaboration in skills acquisition for sustainable growth in Nigeria. Two research questions guided the study. The descriptive survey research design was adopted. The study was carried out in Enugu State. The population for the study was 150 consisting of 56 TVET lecturers and 94 professional staff (technical staff) from University of Nigeria, Nsukka. Purposive sampling technique was used to select 25 lecturers and 42 professional staff with eight years teaching experience. A structured questionnaire validated by three experts was used for data collection. Cronbach Alpha reliability coefficient was used which yielded a coefficient of 0.83. Mean and standard deviation were used to answer the research questions. It was found that political instability, image of TVET in Nigeria, poor funding among others are the major challenges confronting TVET institution industry collaboration. The study further revealed that adequate funding, implementable TVETindustrial policy in Nigeria among others are strategies for TVET institution-industry collaboration for skills acquisition in Nigeria. The study therefore recommended among others that TVET-industrial scholarship board should be established in all the six geo-political zones in Nigeria.
