Competency Needs of Secondary School Leavers for Entering into Brooding of Turkey Poult to Growers Enterprise for Sustainable Growth in Edo State
Abstract
This study focused on the identification of competency needs of secondary school leavers for entering into brooding of turkey poult to growers’ enterprise for sustainable growth in Edo State Nigeria. Four research questions were answered by the study while four null hypotheses were formulated and tested at 0.05 level of significance. Descriptive survey research design was adopted. The study was carried out in Edo state. The population for the study was 424, made up of 245 Teachers of Agricultural Science, 35 registered turkey farmers and 144 Agricultural extension agents from the three senatorial districts of the State. The sample for the study was 230, made up of 123 teachers of Agricultural Science, 35 registered turkey farmers and 72 Agricultural extension agents. Proportionate (50%) stratified random sampling technique was use to select teachers of agricultural science and extension agents, while the entire population of registered turkey farmers were used in the study due to its manageable size. Questionnaire was used for data collection. The questionnaire was validated by three experts. Cronbach alpha reliability method was used to determine the internal consistency of the items which yielded a co efficient value of 0.83. Data collected were analyzed using mean and standard deviation and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was used to test the null hypotheses of no significant difference. Result of the study revealed 9 competencies in planning, 16 competencies in brooding of turkey poult to growers’, 9 competencies in marketing of matured turkey growers, and 14 competencies in facilities needed for brooding of turkey poults to growers enterprises. It was therefore recommended that curriculum developers should integrate the findings of the study into the curriculum of animal husbandry of the secondary schools, and also the administrators of skill acquisitions centers should be directed by the Government to integrate the competencies in brooding of turkey poults to growers enterprise for training unemployed secondary school leavers and other interested youths.
