Utilization of Teaching Facilities by Business Educators for Teaching and Learning in Colleges of Education in North-West Nigeria
Abstract
The mandate of Business Education in Colleges of Education is to train teachers to teach Business Studies at the Junior Secondary School and to prepare students for office or self employment. The guideline for implementation of the programme is enshrined in the minimum standard for Colleges of Education. The major purpose of the study was, therefore, to determine the extent of utilization of teaching facilities in business education departments in Colleges of Education in North-West Nigeria as contained in the policy that established the institutions. One research question and one null hypothesis guided the research. Descriptive survey design was adopted for the research. The research was carried out in Departments of Business Education in 13 Colleges of Education in North-West Nigeria. The population of the study was 9,425, comprised all business education students and lecturers, made up of 9,100 students and 325 lecturers as at 2017/18 academic session. Proportionate and simple random sampling techniques were employed to select sample of 652 respondents, made up of 345 business education students, 87 lecturers. A structured questionnaire was used as instrument for data collection. Cronbach alpha reliability coefficient of 0.86 was obtained for the instrument. The instrument was administered personally and with the help of research assistants. The data were analyzed using mean in answering the research questions while t-test analysis was employed in testing the null hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. It was found that teaching facilities are moderately utilized by students and lecturers in departments of business education in Colleges of Education North-West Nigeria. It was, therefore, recommended that Departmental Heads of Business Education should supervise strict attendance to lectures and use of facilities by lecturers and students during lectures to ensure maximum utilization of teaching facilities. Adequate arrangement should be made for computers, ICT and typewriting laboratories to be open for Business education students after lecture periods to enable them do their practice and assignments.
