About the Journal

Welcome to the maiden edition of the WEISHEIT PHILOSOPHICAL JOURNAL ARIAM (WEPJA). It is a philosophical journal from the Seat of Wisdom Seminary, Ariam Umuahia. The word “Weisheit” is the German language word for "Wisdom." Apart from the practical considerations of choosing a name that has not already been taken by earlier and older philosophical journals, the choice of that word for this journal's name is not accidental. Philosophy, as coined by Pythagoras “Philo ta Sophia,” is defined most basically as “the love of Wisdom.” Besides the more obvious link to our Seminary's name, the choice of the German “Weisheit” has several levels of significance.

The Seat of Wisdom Seminary, Owerri as our mother Seminary, was built with help from the German Archdiocese of Munich and Freising. And the same Diocese in Germany has also contributed financially in Umuahia campus. This journal is of the discipline of Philosophy; and the German influence on Modern and Contemporary philosophy cannot be over-emphasized. So, in a sense, the choice of the German “Weisheit” is as much a tribute as it is an acknowledgment. It is also a concession, one might say, to the universal breadth of this journal's vision and ambition for a global reading public: from our village here in Ariam, to the World. For this maiden edition, we adopt an open style method of documentation. Philosophy throughout the ages has taken the axiomatic posture that the love of Wisdom and its pursuit, with all the exacting rigour that pursuit demands, always does good to the individual Wisdomseeker as well as the larger society.

This journal will do nothing more pretentious than to further that basic contention that the love of Wisdom and an engagement in rigorous thought through epistemic analysis, will improve individuals and develop societies as well. We must further the mission to bring Wisdom to bear in the thoughts and lives of people and society. In developing societies as much as in developed ones, this kind of engagement is necessary because it eliminates bogus, unexamined and “illiterate” ideas. It equally eliminates or minimalizes emotionalised analysis of reality and imparts a sanitizing influence on society. If this journal succeeds in furthering this goal, then we would consider it a success.
