An Evaluation of the Dehumanising Power of Modern Society
Abstract
This paper evaluates the dehumanising power of the modern society. the modern world as presently characterised is inherently structured in a way that dehumanises the human person. This is the case as industrialisation has sadly become the yardstick to measure the value of the human person. In order to substantiate this, the paper outlined some possible causes of dehumanization in the world, as well as the various means through which the act can be perpetrated. The paper highlighted the various scholars and philosophical traditions that challenged the situation and their perspectives. The paper discovered that although the proposals of the philosophers on how to resolve the issue did not concretely address the problem, however, their perspectives and suggestions were very significant as they awakened human consciousness to the reality of man's situation in the world. The paper highlighted some steps through which the problem can be efficiently addressed. It submits that man should not be defined only in terms of one or another of his qualities or capabilities; as he is industrious, so he is social, theoretical, moral, and religious. Thus, any attempt to consider any of these qualities of man in isolation would result in dehumanization.
