Abstract

Social media has become an integral part of the daily lives of Nigerian young adults, providing both benefits and challenges. This systematic review examines the impact of social media on mental health outcomes such as anxiety, depression, self-esteem, and sleep disruption. Evidence indicates that excessive social media use contributes to mental health issues like social comparison, cyberbullying, addiction, and sleep disturbance, while also offering platforms for social connection and mental health awareness. The review highlights the need for mental health education, digital detox strategies, and expanded mental health resources to address these challenges. A multi-faceted approach is essential to promote responsible social media use and safeguard the mental well-being of Nigerian young adults.
