Machiavelli’s Discourses and Representative Democracy in Contemporary Nigeria

  • Benedict Chukwuemeka Okpata

Abstract

The current practice of democracy in Nigeria from 1999 till date is worrisome. Again, the significance and relevance of Machiavelli’s republican principles derived from Discourses upon the First Ten Books of Titus Livy towards the enhancement of modern democracy is a subject of controversy amongst scholars. Nevertheless, this paper attempts an analysis of Machiavelli’s republican principles vis-à-vis the contemporary practice of representative democracy in Nigeria. It is observed that the said principles are not only relevant to renaissance Italy, but could also significantly influence and possibly, benefit contemporary democracies including Nigeria in her current democratic praxis.
