摘要

The quest for better human existence in many African societies is valid and genuine. This is as a result of the unfavourable human condition in the clime. Hence, the need for a philosophical inquiry and support for this quest must not be underrated. Philosophy in Africa must play a lead role in the actualization of this quest. This is a significant way philosophy in Africa can fulfil its mandate. The above prompted the desire of the writer to contribute to discussion on how to make human existence qualitative in Africa. Existentialism is the field devoted to the concrete issues of human existence, and its values are relevant to the African quest. These values are universal and form a significant part of this paper. In essence, values of existentialism are imperative in the realisation of the African quest for better human existence. Sequel to this, this paper interrogate the concept of Iyipada Otun in Yoruba culture and further argues that the concept can give practical impetus to the various existential values. Consequently, the thesis of this paper is that a hermeneutical exposition of the concept of Iyipada Otun in the Yoruba thought system can provide a direction for the people on how to bring practical effect on the various existential values necessary for qualitative human existence. It can also serve as a template for other African societies with similar values. This is a new thinking in the debate on how to resolve African existential problems. Thus, the paper concludes that African countries with similar values should promote such concepts that are germane to better human condition.
