FOREWORD
A cursory glance under the veneer of the historical evolution of philosophy, beginning from the ancient era to the contemporary epoch, shows that from the very foundation, philosophy has been concerned with the task of providing answers to fundamental questions, to which however, no conclusive answers are given. Within the parameters of metaphysics, a retinue of questions emerge: What is the meaning of life? What is our place in the universe? What is consciousness? Does the world exist? Why is there something, rather than nothing? Do we have free will? Does God exist? Does any of these - even my act of questioning - matter?
Over the years, building into different philosophical traditions, varied schools of thought have emerged and have attempted to solve the problems of metaphysics from their different perspectives and rich philosophical traditions. However, none of these attempts has solved the problem in toto. Various opinions from different angles have continued to emerge on the landscape of philosophy to this day. Prof. Ejikemeuwa J. O. Ndubisi in his work Against Hume's Metaphysical Nihilism: In Defense of Metaphysics, joins the retinue of distinguished scholars in metaphysics in the search for the truth of reality of metaphysics.
In the least, the present work is a comprehensive, lucid but eyeopening and monumental piece; it can only come from a scholar of several years of asking questions and questioning answers. Prof. Ndubisi's generosity, love for philosophy and a strong sense of industry have occasioned this beautiful book. In this work of eight chapters, he has not only made a beautiful presentation of the basic dimensions of David Hume's perspective on metaphysics but has critically evaluated it. It is on such critical evaluations that the evolution and future of the philosophical enterprise depend. You can only applaud at the end of each chapter of this piece and wait to applaud again at the end of the next.
It is, therefore, with great pleasure that I write the foreword to this beautiful piece. I strongly recommend this book to all who treasure good philosophical literature; and most especially to anyone who wishes to be abreast with important teachings and developments in philosophy. Teachers, experts, researchers, undergraduate and postgraduate students, beginners and casual readers within and outside the parameters of philosophy are bound to treasure the usefulness of Prof. Ejikemeuwa J. O. Ndubisi's unique contribution to knowledge.
